Lockhart didn’t earn its name from a marketing campaign. The Texas Legislature made it official in 1999: Lockhart is the Barbecue Capital of Texas. But the town had been proving it for over a century before that vote ever happened.
Black’s Barbecue has been run by the same family since 1932. Four generations of the Black family have worked the pits, through segregation-era Texas, when the Blacks made a point of serving everyone and hiring across racial lines, a stance that wasn’t universally popular at the time. Kreuz Market traces back to 1900. Edgar Schmidt bought it in 1948 and ran it out of the same building on South Commerce Street for almost fifty years. When Schmidt died in 1990, he left the building to his daughter and the business to his sons. The split that followed made headlines. In 1999, the sons moved Kreuz Market to a new spot on North Colorado, carrying hot coals from the old pit to light the new one, with a police escort down Commerce Street.
Smitty’s Market picked up where Kreuz left the building. Nina Schmidt Sells reopened her father’s original space that same year, under his nickname, on the same pit he’d used since 1948. Walk in today and the first thing you see is a log burning in an open pit behind the counter.
Chisholm Trail Bar-B-Q rounds out downtown. Opened in 1978 by a former Black’s pitmaster, it’s the newest name on the block and still older than most restaurants anywhere.
